WISEs bridging Europe’s basic skills gap

Open to public

According to a number of EU publications[1], Europe is facing basic skills challenges. People need a broad set of basic skills, including numeracy, literacy and basic digital skills, to get access to jobs and participate fully in society.

While the economic situation weighs heavily on the employment situation, people are confronted with the hard reality where the absence of employment creates or aggravates a certain number of existing difficulties which further negatively impact their chances to access the labour market and threaten professional trajectories. In this context, it is essential to have a special attention to the situation of vulnerable people who are far from the labour market and dis-socialized. These people are those with low or no qualifications, and have insufficient skills. However, they have a chance to be sustainably socially and professionally integrated through Work Integration Social Enterprises (WISEs).
